Supernatural, Season Four
I've been watching more Supernatural. This goes from "Are You There God? It’s Me, Dean Winchester" up through "Heaven and Hell," one of the most amazing episodes ever.
Are You There God? It’s Me, Dean Winchester
Olivia appears to be another kickass woman. I’m putting her in the same category with Jo. Well crap, she didn’t last long. Wow, Sam is kinda quick to believe the angel thing. Dean: “If there is a God out there, why would he give a crap about me?” Oh, Dean’s low self-esteem is showing again. Someone is killing hunters… getting the small fry off the battlefield? Oh no. You can’t kill Bobby. No! “Bobby, you’re awesome,” Dean announces, and after seeing his panic room, I agree. Bobby is awesome and smart and loyal. Well, how nice. Someone is trying to bring the apocalypse. Nice.
Castiel is not really very nice. “You should show some respect. I dragged you out of hell. I can throw you back in.” Of course, Dean is used to working for people who aren’t very nice.
In the Beginning
The boys seem so separate this season… which makes sense considering that Dean is not sharing about his time in hell and Sam is used to trusting Ruby. I like Ruby, and even I think that it’s a dumb move to trust her. Castiel is manipulative, isn’t he… which works because Dean is stubborn and he needs to be pushed. That’s how his father had him wrapped around his finger. And how ironic is that… there’s his father. Whoa. Damn. Mom is a badass. It’s actually sad to see these hints of his father—this kind and open-hearted man that once was John Winchester. The actor who plays Dean is pretty amazing because when he’s talking to his mother, my heart aches for him. Oh crap. Dean just gave yellow-eyed demon a complete blueprint for taking out his family. Shit, shit, shit… although that is some damn good plotting.
Whoa… WAIT! He’s making deals to get the children from the breeders… that means that Mary made a deal! Oh Mary. Oh no. Well, that explains a lot. And I don’t think Castiel ever wanted Dean to save anyone. He wanted Dean to understand. Yep, sure enough. Whoa, so Dean stops Sam or the angels will? That makes me think that the angels can’t stop Sam; they brought Dean back to do the job they couldn’t.
Metamorphosis
So Ruby and Sam were getting it on, if the demon can be believed, and Sam certainly wasn’t arguing there. However, that’s a little creepy because there’s a girl in there. I really hope it’s some demon worshipping girl who volunteered for this duty. Dean is really pulling out all the guilt on Sam. God doesn’t want him doing this. Yeah, Sam is getting it with both barrels.
Now, the question is, would Jack have turned if the hunter hadn’t tied him and his wife up? And interestingly enough, the writers never answer that. I do like that Sam seems to have come back around and started to show some sympathy again. This is the first time since the vampire episode that I’ve really seen Sam be the moral “north” he started out being.
Monster Movie
Okay, goofy but fun. This is the way you do goofy right. I love the villain.
Yellow Fever.
This one is heart-breaking. Utterly heartbreaking. The plot is familiar enough. My favorite version of it is from an old movie called Scarecrow. However, no matter what the circumstances, the image of a mentally disabled man being blamed always seems to hit me. And here, he really has become the victim. Sad, sad, and sad. And while I appreciate the sheer cleverness of scaring a ghost to death, it makes me ache that they had to hurt that man again. And best of all…. BOBBY!!
"It's the Great Pumpkin, Sam Winchester"
You know, when I would see people put Dean/Castiel on their headings, I always “heard” that as Cas-teal. Now every time I hear Cas-tea-el, it feels weird.
Wait… Uriel is going to kill the entire town? But God said, “For the sake of ten, I will not destroy it,” with the it in question being Sodom. So, go would rather let evil flourish than kill ten righteous men. Did God have a brain fart at some point or is someone else pulling the strings. Mud monkeys??? Uriel called them mud monkeys??? Okay, which side are these guys on?? “You know our true orders” Okay, I’m really not vibing to the angels here. I’m with Dean. They’re dicks.
I have to say, Sam in kinda hot when he fights. He looks more and more like his brother, until he pulls out the demon bit and banishes the guy with the power of his brain. And Dean looks so disappointed in him. Sad face.
So the whole thing was a test? I don’t think Dean failed the test. And I like that Castiel admits that he doesn’t have the answers.
Wishful Thinking
Why is Dean lying about remembering hell? Is he trying to keep Sam from feeling guilty.
Oh my god! The teddy bear is wacking off. Okay, this is freaky, and I love how the boys are reacting. Yeah, they’re used to weird. Not this weird. The actors are making this whole thing work, they really are. I do like the fact that Sam admits that he has changed too much to go back to their own life.
Hey, Tiamat makes an appearance, and I am so glad that they use her myth right. Wait… isn’t that nerd the guy from Star Trek Next Generation who always had trouble with women and who made a holoprogram with women who loved him? Am I imagining this? Oh, I do like his pain when he had to give up Hope and his dreams, but he did it because it was the right thing to do. I want to write him a “happily ever after” story.
I Know What You Did Last Summer
Whoa… is Anna another one of the demon kids like Sam? I thought that Sam was the last one… that he had to fight to the last. I don’t like the new Ruby… the actress just doesn’t “read” right to me for some reason.
Oh that flashback hurt. Yeah, of course Sam tried to change places, but the fact that the demons wouldn’t trade does suggest that someone has plans for Dean. Maybe Sam has “sullied” his soul too much by using demonic powers… that would make Dean the real danger if his soul is purer. Yeah, Dean is the purer soul, and how ironic is that.
Okay, the girl is definitely hearing angels. And our boys are becoming official badasses. Sewing themselves up… popping in a shoulder without pain killers. Ow. Ow ow.
Wow. Sam made her jump into a dead/dying body. You know, I really do feel a lot better now that I know the demoness isn’t sitting on top of an innocent. LOL… “Brainstabbing imagery.” I love how Dean reacts to the idea of Sam and Ruby. You know, I think I saw part of this episode, too. It was another one that made zero sense when watched out of context. And now I see that Castiel is trying to kill eavesdropping girl. For an angel, he does some pretty shitty things.
Heaven and Hell
Okay, so Anna isn’t just tapping the angel conversations, but she knows blood spells. So, her real father wanted her dead… is she the daughter of a demon? Eeek. I never saw that coming. She was an angel! And what does she know about what Dean did in hell?
You know, Dean has sex when Anna asks for it. He is on the bottom in the car, and he is always looking at her as though searching her expression to see what she wants. He is so very subby. Subby, subby, subby. And watching Dean volunteer to go to hell to protect her. Oh, my heart can’t take the subby love.
I really get the feeling this is going down the Babylon Five route. Heaven and the angels are no more good than any other anal-retentive, control freak.
Oh God. I knew the torture Dean suffered. I had no idea Dean had been forced to torture. Oh my God. Dean. And the fact they put this detail in the episode where his sweet subby side is front and center. OMG. Heart broken. Heart broken. Oh holy crap. Okay, that was an enormous sucker punch to the gut.

Date: 2012-07-18 01:08 am (UTC)It's Me Dean Winchester: Despite the mangling of the Bible, I really like this episode. You get to see some of Bobby's history and Castiel makes his second kick butt appearance - though nothing quite tops the first episode and that walk through every protective symbol Bobby could think up. Yup Castiel isn't very nice but hey he is dealing with Dean and one thing we know about Dean - he is one stubborn cuss and equally one heck of a smart aleck - so much so that I think its terminal- snicker
In the Beginning was a great episode - It was actually supposed to be 4th and I think they should have left in that slot but the producers wanted to take advantage of the late season due to the elections and get some momentum going. I think Ruby is so deliciously sneaky, the writers did a very nice job with her. Yes Mary Winchester is so cool and Jensen Ackles rocks his scenes with both Dean's parents so hard. Loved his enthusiasm over the Impala with John - Another amusing note - though this is not explained until season 6 - ever wonder why Daniel Elkins just let this hunter who broke into his house have the Colt. Like it wasn't the most important weapon in the whole show? I did
Metamorphis - solid episode - lots of anvils but solid.
Monster Movie - Loved this episode Bob Singer the director was brilliant. He not only gave a nod to famous monster movies but to hard boiled PIs in Film Noir and the great Billy Wilder flick Sunset Boulevard.
Yellow Fever -First Episode by the worst writers of the series. Hated how Sam's character was written. Hated it. Hated the low ball Dumb and Dumber Humor. Hated how they had to destroy the ghost. Hated it. Hated how they violated all the parameters and set up that they had in the last 3 seasons that shows that if Dean and Sam go into a station pretending to be FBI they are almost always caught (this was addressed in a later episode after fans complained that this episode violated the shows own mythology) Some good moments - mostly because Jensen and Jared can act -=not because of the writing - oh and Eye of the Tiger!
Great Pumpkin - good epi - had the Wiccas up in arms but still enjoyable. Glad you caught on to what other fans were still wearing blinkers on - since Sam went through his version of Ground Hog Day he is getting more John like (at least I think its more John than any version of Dean) - obsessive - and when he is obsessive he is blind
Wishful thinking - if you write a happily ever after story I will read it. This is one of Ben Edlund's stories. The man is nuts but it always works - would it work if it weren't Jensen and Jared. Don't know it really needs strong actors
I know what you did last Summer: Ok I can say it now - Gen doesn't feel right at this point because Ruby is in full Sam manipulation mode . Trying to be a flattering Jessica at first and then a Sassy tough girl and neither worked. Now she is using Dean's absence to become family, first sisterly and then not so much.
Heaven and Hell - LOL Dean is ALWAYS ON THE BOTTOM EVERY SINGLE SEX SCENE and Sam is always in a control position. I don't know if that is Jensen's choice or if in this case they wanted to have a contrast between Sam and Ruby. Where Sam having sex with Ruby was damning him and Anna and Dean was supposed to be healing
My friend put it this way Hell is Chaotic Evil and Heaven is Lawful Evil
Yes subby Dean is so sweet - and just wait - Jensen and Jared just tear at the heartstrings this whole season
Thank you so much for sharing your enjoyment of the series, it reminds me why I love it so much
