I'm in editing hell, so I did a snippet to revive my slowly dying muse. This is dark. And nasty. With a hint of hope (I think). Don't expect more.

Slow Slide to Slave
Xander/Angel-Angelus

After Xander gets caught poking around the wrong demons, he gets turned into a slave. But when Buffy asks Angel to take custody of him because she certainly can't take him back to her house, things get messier than any of them expected. Well, other than Angelus. Angelus totally knew this was going to happen--he just didn't share that information with anyone.

“He violated out laws. He will be slaved,” the demon leader announced. Buffy clenched her fists, but Giles’ warning seemed to keep her slayer instincts under control. The Roa were usually harmless, travelling to different demon communities, using glamours to hide rather than attacking anyone. They were even vegetarians, something Angelus felt contempt for. Angel kept his emotions off his face for fear that some of Angelus’ less pleasant thoughts might bleed through.

“Okay, look. I get it. He shouldn’t have gone wandering.” Buffy smelled of aggression and anger, but Angel thought most of that was for Xander who had wandered off to ‘check’ on the Roa after Giles had ordered them all to stay away. “However, if you try to turn him into a slave, then I’m going to have to come back and do the whole slay thing, and then no one is going to be happy. So just give him back, and we’ll forget this every happened.”

Angel flexed his fingers. After that threat, the Roa would likely attack, and he wasn’t sure if he and Buffy would be able to fight them all off. This was a large tribe, and while Roa weren’t aggressive, when they did fight, they were brutal killers. Angelus rattled his cage, bombarding Angel with images of pushing Buffy toward the elders before running for the exit. The strategy would likely save Angel, but Buffy and the boy would most likely die. Angel ignored the increasing pressure to give in to self-preservation and the demon instincts.

The leader fell back with several of the older demons to talk. That left Buffy shifting her weight and muttering to herself about how she was going to kill Xander. Angel was not a fan of the boy, but he had to admit that both Buffy and Willow had spent a lot of time talking about how uncomfortable they were leaving the tribe of demons to wander through unchallenged. Angel wasn’t surprised the boy tried to do something while Buffy and Willow were working on the problem with the mayor.

After conferring privately, one of the elders stepped forward. “The boy is disrespectful and uncontrolled.”

Angel couldn’t agree more.

“He will be slaved, but if you wish to take him, he can be slaved to one of you, for you have shown more control.”

Angel understood the honor the Roa were offering, but he had lived long enough that he distrusted the words. There was a trap here. Somewhere.

“Um, okay,” Buffy said. “You aren’t going to like brand him or something before you give him back, are you?”

The Roa all looked at each other before one turned to Buffy and asked, “What is branding?” She was one of the younger ones, her hair still black and silver where the oldest of them had hair faded to a dull blond. Angel wondered if they assumed Buffy was the elder because of her hair.

“A mark on the skin. We really don’t want him marked.”

The Roa smiled, showing off rows of sharp teeth. It did not look like a friendly gesture, but perhaps she was imitating humans to make Buffy more comfortable. “His skin shall not be marked. But which of you will be master to this slave?”

Buffy looked over at Angel. The horror that washed over Angel at the thought must have shown on his face.

“It’s just for one night,” she whispered, but she had underestimated Roa senses.

One of them said, “The slave will be unable to leave his master for a significant period of time. Otherwise, the young one would simply wander into trouble again. This is not for one night, but for a lifetime.”

Buffy’s eyes got big. “Okay. But you know, he’s going to grow up in a few years. So maybe we could make this a shorter period than, you know, life.”

“If he is immature, his progenitors should not have allowed him to wander. So we accept that he is full grown and still unable to control his dangerous impulses. He will be slaved for life to one of you or to one of us,” the oldest of the Roa said firmly. “Choose or leave.”

Buffy gave Angel another desperate look. “I can’t take him home. Mom would have a fit. You could. We can find you a bigger place so Xander’s not underfoot. You have to.”

Angel didn’t have to, but the way Buffy looked at him made it impossible for him to say no. Angelus was oddly silent, and Angel didn’t know what to make of that. He feared it because sometimes his demon managed to keep certain information away from Angel’s conscious awareness. A silent Angelus usually meant a plotting demon, but Angel had no real reason to refuse. “I’ll take him,” he said unhappily.

The Roa all nodded in unison. “Come,” one said, and the crowd of demons parted for Angel to walk through.

The new house might be larger, but it wasn’t large enough for Angel to escape the constant presence of Xander. Right now, the sound of chewing was almost maddening. Angel had made a comment to Giles, but he insisted that teenaged boys did eat obscene amounts of food. However, Xander appeared to be eating so much that he was starting to gain weight.

The room went blissfully silent, and Angel looked up as Xander edged into the room. He’d tried hiding from Xander, but he found that the boy would follow him. It was too much effort to try and find a secluded spot.

When Angel saw Xander, he was shocked. Xander had a pencil in his mouth and a school book in hand. That wasn’t unusual, especially since Angel had set the rule that Xander had to do all schoolwork. But he had turned the pencil sideways and shoved it so far into his mouth that it pulled cruelly at the edges of his mouth. He held it there between his teeth and looked at Angel.

‘Our need to see him gagged works on him through the Roa magic,’ Angelus whispered gleefully, and the demon released his knowledge of Roa magic. The slaves slowly craved what their masters wanted. They yearned for whatever was in their master’s mind. Angel wanted Xander gagged, and now he was dying for the lack of something to shove in his mouth.

Angel slowly closed his own book. This was bad. Buffy would never forgive him, but if Angel allowed Xander to self-destruct, he would be equally as culpable. “Come here,” Angel ordered. Xander moved to the chair without removing the pencil. When he sat down, he kept his gaze on his book.

“Do you want something in your mouth?” Angel asked. Xander looked up in panic. He quickly pulled the pencil out, but then he went silent. He leaked stress hormones, but he also stank of need. “This is the magic,” Angel said. He had no intention of telling the truth, but he could embellish things so that if Xander carried tales back to Buffy, Angel would not look like a monster. “You know you make me angry with your talking, so the Roa magic seeks to find a way that you can feel better about serving your master.”

“So it makes me eat when I’m not hungry?” Xander asked. He was confused rather than confrontational. That was a nice change.

“It makes you crave a gag so you feel more comfortable knowing you aren’t talking too much. You know you can’t control your mouth, so the magic tries to help you find a solution.” Angel hoped that put the onus on the boy and not on his own twisted need to see Xander Harris gagged.

“Oh,” Xander said. He opened his mouth to say something else, but then he stopped.

“Go up to my room and look for some fabric I can use for a gag,” Angel ordered. Xander was on his feet before Angel had even finished, but when he heard the whole order, he paused.

“You want me to pick my own gag?”

Angel had a number of things in his room—ties and handkerchiefs and scarfs. They would all make for nice gags, but if Angel chose the gag, Buffy would not take that well. “It is your need the magic hopes to sate. So you need to choose something that makes you feel good,” Angel said. “I give you permission to look through my room until you find something you want stuffed in that mouth of yours.”

Angel opened his book and pretended to read, but he couldn’t stop listening to Xander’s racing heart. Angelus all but purred at the thought of Xander gagged. He wanted to use a thick leather belt that would tear into the corners of his mouth and leave him bleeding. Angel pointed out that one sign of abuse and Buffy would stake them, but Angelus didn’t have the fear of Buffy that he’d once felt. However, given that she had sent them to hell, Angelus had a lot of anger. Angel feared Xander might bear some of the brunt of that.

Only after Xander had crept out of the room did Angel find the strength to concentrate on his book again. If the spell twisted Xander into his perfect servant, Angel needed to find a way to keep the others from seeing the changes. He could order Xander to hide the gag and anything else when the others came over, but this still felt risky.

Angelus agreed, and he relished the feeling of danger.

When Xander slid back into the room, he stayed near the door, his hands behind his back. Angel pretended to read, unwilling to let Xander know how much he commanded Angel’s attention. Eventually Angel closed his book and looked over. Xander walked with jerky motions as if not in total control of himself, but then he wasn’t. When he came close, he pulled his hands out, and Angel couldn’t control his shock.

In one hand Xander had a pair of Angel’s underwear, in the other he had duct tape. Angelus roared his delight. It was even better than a leather belt.

“I can take them back.” Xander started backing away.

“No,” Angel said, or maybe it was Angelus speaking because Angel was still a little stunned. “The fabric is a lot for your mouth. Go get it damp so it goes in easier, but wring all the water out that you can. Leave the tape here.”

Xander put the tape down on the coffee table and practically ran out of the room.

Angelus reveled in the idea of Xander constantly gagged with his master underwear. He wondered if could get Xander to ask for Angel’s used underwear. While Angel had no bodily functions to soil the underwear, Angelus liked the idea of Xander craving Angel’s dirty things. Angel countered that if Xander wore duct tape on his face, particularly for that long, it would create a noticeable rash. Giles would recognize it immediately, even if Buffy didn’t. Ah, Angelus responded, but as his master, you can order his body to not react. You can order him to feel pain. Or not feel pain, Angel responded. He felt the demon’s contempt at that suggestion. Angelus also pointed out that the boy would yearn to become Angel’s perfect toy, so if Angel tried to be too nice, the magic would torture the boy more effectively than Angel could—all in the name of pleasing Angelus.

Angel could feel the truth in that last statement. The spell wanted Angel and Angelus happy. Xander would not be happy otherwise.

Xander came back with the damp underwear in his hand. “I don’t know about this. I mean, this is a little weird. Maybe we should get Giles.” He sounded unsure, but Angelus roared at the idea of Xander turning to anyone else.

“Come here,” Angel ordered. Xander obeyed immediately. When he came close, Angel caught his arm and pulled him down so Xander was kneeling beside Angel. He tried to struggle back to his feet, but Angel put a hand on his shoulder and held him in place. After a second or two, Xander settled down, his eyes wide and frightened.

“The spell is taking your ideas. You know your words get you in trouble and make people angry, don’t they?”

Xander nodded unhappily.

“So if you could stop the words, you’d be more likable. Can you tell me you’ve never had that thought?”

Xander sighed. “Only a million times.”

That was more than Angel had expected. Perhaps the spell was starting with Angel’s desire to gag Xander because there was such fertile ground for the seed to grow. “Put the underwear in your mouth—all of it,” Angel ordered. He picked up the duct tape.

Xander worked to get all the fabric in. It made his cheeks puff out and forced his jaw to open wide. Angel pulled off a strip of tape and covered the lower part of Xander’s face with it, holding the gag in place.

“Is that enough tape or do you want to feel like the gag is really locked in there?” Angel asked. Xander looked up at him, unable to answer, and Angel took a second to enjoy the silence and the boy’s clear frustration since he wanted to answer his master’s question. It was a heady power. “Do you want more tape?” Angel asked after a minute or so.

Xander closed his eyes and nodded. Oh, this was entirely too wonderful. Angel started wrapping the tape around Xander’s head over and over until the lower part of his face was encased in silver. Then he tore the end and smoothed it down. A normal human would only be able to wear this gag for a short time, but Angelus explained that Angel could order Xander’s flesh to accommodate his wishes.

“You will be able to breathe easily through your nose,” Angel ordered him, and he could feel the magic respond to his order. Xander slowly opened his eyes and looked up at Angel. Angelus pushed for pain, and Angel knew he had to provide some or Angelus would never be satisfied. However, he didn’t want to cause Xander real harm. The boy was an annoyance, not an enemy to be crushed.

Angel cupped Xander’s head in his hands. “Your jaw will start to ache more and more. The spell won’t stop that,” he said. “However, if the pain gets to be too much, come to me and I’ll massage the muscle.” Angel knew from Angelus’ experiences with keeping slaves that massaging the jaw muscle would ease the cramps, but it would be blindingly painful, particularly if Angel didn’t take the gag out first. Angel could allow that, but he didn’t want Xander damaged. “However, the second you take the gag out, you’ll feel fine, and the tape won’t leave any evidence on your face. Understand?”

Xander nodded.

“If you need me to ease the cramping in your face, come kneel down, and I’ll tend you,” Angel offered. “Now you have homework.”

Xander nodded again and hesitated before he got up and went over to where he’d dropped his book.

“Xander,” Angel called. He looked over. “Do you feel better?”

Xander didn’t move for a second, but then he nodded.

“A lot better?”

This time Xander responded immediately, nodding again.

Angel smiled. “Good. When you come home, I want you to go to my room, find some underwear, and gag yourself immediately. But don’t let anyone see you like this. You don’t need to be humiliated for your needs. So if Buffy or Giles or anyone else comes over, you need to take the gag off and hide it.”

Xander sagged, his gratitude clear even without words. He gave a quick nod.

Angel had a rather pleasant night. He read, and the sound of Xander’s pencil scratching over paper was the only sound in the house. Once Xander came over and tentatively knelt beside Angel’s chair. Angel moved Xander until he knelt between Angel’s legs, and then Angel massaged Xander’s face. The boy grunted into his gag and tears slipped over his cheeks as Angel dug his fingers into the muscles, forcing them to relax. Angelus cherished the silent screams behind the gag and the way Xander squirmed. Angel took pleasure in the relief in Xander’s eyes when the massage was over and the cramping had stopped. Angel had brought relief, and that’s all Xander cared about.

He headed back for his books, crawling for a few feet before he got up onto his feet. It was the most perfect day Angel had enjoyed in a long time. When bedtime came, Angel pulled the half-written essay from Xander’s hand and followed him up to bed. He watched Xander wash, claiming that since Xander couldn’t call for help if something happened, that Angel wanted to make sure he was safe. When Xander was in his train pajamas, he crawled in bed, and Angel ordered Xander to sleep. The effect was so immediate that Xander didn’t stay awake long enough to see Angel trace a finger over the thick gag that changed the shape of Xander’s face.

It is dark and a bit nasty, but it's still kind of delightful. Not sure what that says about me, but...

I wrote it, so I'm not sure what that says about me, except that editing puts me in a foul mood.

I LOVE THIS!

The craving for darkness... yes, I have it!

You did an excellent job at showing the awakening of Angel's demon and the way it's controlling the action. Xander's not the only slave, is he?

There is darkness in this universe, and there always will be. In the next snippet, there's also some light.

And you're right that Angelus is getting his way with Angel and Xander.

Heh - I'm usually in the other camp - I prefer some hope to follow my darkness; but then again, I can't appreciate tragedy, so I clearly have no taste! :-D anyway, ithe story does it's job, so to each their own. :-)

Of cour you realize, I now can't help but offer up another idea for your muse to maybe nibble on. :-P

I've had this idea for months, that, for various reasons, the Claimings 'verse is a different reality or dimension - perhaps one slightly more 'demony' than ours' - and that Rownt psychology and even physiology would be perfectly compatible with them being part demon in their bloodline, albeit ones that 'tamed', or redirected, that part of their nature to more productive directions. I know all my prompts seem to come back to Buffy x-over, but I'd had the impression that your 'Claimings' series fealt more like your fanfic than your original work, and I think this is why. :-)

Hope your mother's doing well, and that you've had time to catch up on your 'to be read' backlog. *poke* *poke*. :-)

I think there is some hope here, but it is a darker universe, that's for sure.

And I can see that what Buffy calls demons could quite easily be called dimensional aliens. I've played with that idea in my STargate crossovers.

Honestly, I think it's an unfortunate tick with some writers, the way everything not explicitly 'fantasy' type magic is defined as, well, not. I.E., one X-men fanfic I've seen mentiones 'new' mutants initially mistaking their powers for magic, and a couple or trek fics distinguish the powers of Q from Buffy type magic. And the practical differences would be...? I would venture that the same goes for 'inter-dimensional aliens/demons'.

By the same token, spells which, using certain ingredients under certain conditions, reliably produce the same, predictable result, shouldn't be automatically be written as that incomprehensible to a fair-minded man of science and logic. It's a rather different thing from a miracle, after all.

Both conventions are a bit silly, if you think about it. :-D

Some lovely bittersweet chocolate there. The Angel/Angelus balance was very interesting. Especially as both of them have a problem with Xander and having him thoroughly under their control appeals to them both in different ways. One shudders to think what this "relationship" will look like a year from now. And surely Giles knows about Roa magic. Just how complicit is he in all of this? You're little bit of stress relief is awfully thought provoking. :)

Angel is having more trouble locking Angelus away because both of them enjoy the power over Xander a little too much. And I do think Giles knows what's going on, but what can he do now that the spell is done? No doubt he read Buffy the riot act about agreeing to spells she didn't understand.

First, I'd really like to know where this is in the timeline. If it before Buffy's 17th birthday, this could change everything.

Cheers to Angelus, once again proving he's amazingly manipulative, while surrounded by people too gullible to understand what's going on. That he manages a form of slavery is STILL better than Xander's home life is truly pathetic, and the best thing in this for Xander.

The choice of gag was wonderfully twisted, and even hints that this could actually work. After a while, Angel will only use constant gagging to remind Xander to think before he speaks, and then it gets interesting.

I've always thought Angelus could be swayed to a large degree by loyalty. Imagine the hell of living with Darla, Dru and Spike. Darla only cared about herself, Dru was too far gone to really consider it, and Spike was only in orbit about Dru. For all his posturing, Angelus was a very lonely demon.

Angel is much more in love with the idea of Buffy, than with the woman herself. And Xander just wants a place to truly, truly belong. It's not a classic romance, but it has potential.

This is early in season three. Angelus is angry at losing to Angel and Buffy (and getting sent to hell), and now he has the perfect toy that he can use to regain a little of his power. And I like your ideas about loyalty. I put another tidbit up, and I really think that loyalty idea inspired Angelus to use this slave for something other than a victim to make himself feel bigger (although Xander is that too).
