Spike is always going to be Spike--protective and loving of those who are part of his family, brutal and dangerous to those who are not. The doctor was riding a pretty thin edge there because he was allowing Trista to hurt.
And I really am grateful dijanna gave me that plot bunny with Trista because it was a nice way to show both the imperfections and cracks in this universe while showing that those broken places can't stop a person from finding happiness.
