He is holding onto that little piece of metal and that little bit of hope... he needs them right now. And yes, this argument is pretty well designed to appeal to Xander's psyche. I think when Xander didn't kill Posk, he reveal a whole lot to Dareh, and the demon is nothing if not good at understanding humans.
And I do like the car bomb bit. He's not the broken slave Spike first found.
