It's classisicm, plain and simple. Xander's not perceived as being one of the intellectual set (which shows how little respect they have for common sense and practical/tactical solutions, which he ~is good at), so he's not as good as they are. That's why it's laughable that he works at fast food places (never mind that nobody else is working at all).
His working in construction and actually being very good at it, getting promoted, moving into a nice place, committing in a relationship, etc-it was all a great storyline for him. He really matured in many ways, with potential for more growth...and then, they threw him under the bus. D:
It's been how many years later, and I STILL resent the way they treated him, even more than I resent that they chipped Spike so Buffy could take him to bed! (And I resent that a lot, lol.)
