I think he wanted to talk Warren down. He really wanted to be the perfect white knight who could save everyone, and when he couldn't, he'd shuffle the problem off for Giles or Riley to deal with. However, the other guys aren't there, and I think that as a father, Xander is starting to step up and make the hard choices.
And I am working on those other projects. I just can't leave this one hanging for that long.
