And you know, I don't think Dutton Tech makes him a genius, but in canon, that is where he went, and I think Warren is a legend in his own mind, so I think he's taken the fact that he went to college early and warped it into proof that he's too good for society's rules.
And yes, Xander protected Spike's "family" so Spike will protect him.
