Having 900 years of memory, Xander might have remembered the last time the judge appeared. It's possible. And I really think he would have been better able to handle Cordy, so something must have changed in there. And those hours in Angelus' lair will at least be alluded to in enough detail for people to figure it out. That one night did make a lot of things change.
