OK, I was wrong in my theory about what Spike was doing. What Spike was apparently doing was getting captured by the shurl and then going to Angel for help. He had nothing to do with his own disappearance at all, or the failure to rescue Xander in a timely fashion.
However, apparently the pregnant girl *was* rescued...so that mission accomplished. I'm looking forward to getting the details of that.
And I heartily concur with those who've already commented that the current antipathy Xander has toward Spike is a manifestation of something good: his gradually reviving sense of self, and of self-worth (he wouldn't be so disappointed in himself if he wasn't coming to expect more success from himself).
I wonder what Xander needs now--a successful escape...from Spike?
