Actually, Dareh has made an earlier appearance in the story, so I think that he has his own plans for Xander.
And yes, I'm feeling bad for Xander who both feels like he needs to give up on hope before it breaks him (again), and who can't give up the belief that Spike is out there somewhere. *pets Xander*
