As much as people want to help Xander, a lot of the healing and recovery has to be done inside his own head. I think Spike understands that, and Spike knows that the only thing he can do is give Xander a safe place where he can recover.
And I'm glad that you liked that image. When we saw Xander back as the harem boy in heat when he didn't even know whether Spike was a good guy or a bad guy, he was prey. And now he's caught in the middle, but he isn't helpless prey anymore. And the line "well-trained prey" is velvet's. She really does that a lot of powerful little touches to this story.
