I always figured she was pulling her usual "I'm the Slayer, you're not" martyr act like she always did, with a generous helping of self-pity that some of them decided not to indulge.
But I like your idea better, lol. It does make sense-there's only supposed to be one Slayer, and we've seen they don't really share territory well; and Buffy's the longest-lived, so she's the most demonic. Xander ought to slip Giles the suggestion, though, so someone with proper "credentials" looks into it (and emphasizes that demonic does not equate with bad, just sometimes dangerous or difficult).
