I think in part, a lot of what I'm getting from this version of Xander is that he is willing to follow, but he only wants to follow a leader who knows what they're doing and is someone he can believe in. Which is why he's willing to work with Spike to kill Warren, but he still considers himself a follower of Buffy.

And if there isn't anyone around who he thinks is worth following, then he goes it alone. And he's proven that he IS capable of going it alone - such is the case with his daughter and his secret second life he led. It's also an example of the how and why he's able to be in charge at the job site (other than the fact that nothing life threatening or world ending is really happening there on a regular basis).
