I think guys would rather ignore the messier side of feelings, but Xander is seeing just how hurt Spike is. One thing you can say about Xander is that he will do anything for the people he loves--and he does love Spike here, you're right about that. Oh, he'd never admit it, but he does. So, he'll have the horrible, awkward conversation if it helps Spike.
