They all had to run for it. Angelus is no one to mess with, and Spike is very well aware of just how cranky he can get. And the only two magic users in their lives are Jenny and Willow. Willow is still dealing with the JAG/arrest fallout. This isn't like her. However, Jenny doesn't like them, and now someone has mucked with the gypsy curse... I say there are too much coincidence there.
And I always thought of Angelus as a coward. Spike attacked slayers; Angelus attacked nuns.
