I never thought of Riley as academic, but he was a TA for Buffy's freshman course so he has a lot deeper academic background than normally seen. I can see why Riley wants to look at the values and the dysfunctions of societies after the Initiative fiasco more than the same problems with individuals. Maggie Walsh wasn't a lone villian but part of a branch of a legitimate military organization. So is Riley going to study close knit subcultural and tribal groups in modern societies and their self referencing ethics? He can study gang of youths, criminals, bankers, teachers and cops. Blair can offer up Dean Edwards and Rainer administration as a semi criminal subculture.
