In canon, Wesley did stick around after it seemed like he had worn out his welcome. But then, what else did he have? I mean, we know that he's going to wander off to be a rogue demon hunter, but right now, he's just lost.
And Spike loves Angel, but he also loves Xander, and I think the fact that Xander didn't see that had something to do with the fact that Xander doesn't have the best self-esteem, although he's doing better than in canon.
