Xander deserves all the love he gets. When I watch him go up against Angelus or the zombie trio in canon, I have to give him credit for being shrewd and brave, and yet on the show they do turn him into an idiot who can't even keep a fast-food job. I have no idea why they would have done that, especially since Buffy is show as just as book-dumb as Xander in the first three years. But then she gets to grow out of that, and Xander is stuck as poor, dumb townie.
I think trouble is brewing with Oz and Willow because nothing has come to a head like in canon. Everything came out, Willow apologized, begged, and backed off, and Oz was able to come back to the relationship in his own time. Here, it's just all festering under the surface where it just gets stirred and stirred and stirred.
But in the end, this whole thing with Angelus really may still end up being more positive than negative. Spike is running home, Angel is going to end up taking better care of himself, and the relationship between Xander and Angel (which had become rather rutlike) is going to get a solid shake-up. Yeah, this is going to be ugly for a while, but Angel and Xander both need to deal with Angelus.
I'm just really glad you're enjoying this. Oh, and Xander and Cordelia are still together. No secret kiss, no impaling, no break up. Buffy did the newspaper trick during the prom queen competition.
