Angel has a limited number of choices about who to call, and some of those might just tell him to turn Xander. Of course Blair's brand of honesty was a little hard for him to take, but his advice is obviously working. The 'making them eat vegetables' is a good way to show that Angel cares about them in ways that go beyond the superficial.
