Flights of Fancy

The soul is just so weird in canon. He loses it with Buffy, he doesn't lose it with other women he has sex with. He doesn't lose it when happy with Cordy and baby Conner. He does lose it when the mage builds a whole fantasy ending with him sleeping with Cordy. He "temporarily" loses it when stoned, but he doesn't really lose it because it's still there, so he's still Angel only he's Angel acting like Angelus. Odd odd odd. And I think that his mental state is the ONLY thing we can base the happiness clause on without contradicting some part of canon.
