Jim senses are coming on a line a lot more gradually here. They've been flickering, and while this is certainly a painful episode, it doesn't rise to the level of the spike that blinded Jim in series. I think having his guide there is making Jim's senses develop a little more naturally.
And yeah, Blair was happier when his theories were wrong a little more often.
