Charlie is one of those decent people stuck in a self-destructive rut. However, he'll pull himself out in order to help other people, even if he won't help himself.

Blair's overreaction has very little to do with the guides. AFter all, what he said was, "Man. I just feel so damn helpless" and "I know. I know I'm being unreasonable." Jim wasn't letting him go on the case, Kelly was stalking him, and the guides were hurting Jim. He just felt too helpless in the face of all of it and blew.
