Charlie is a decent person who has put his neck on the line more than once, so I don't see him "hiding" in drugs without a pretty major backstory. And I think Jim already knew that in some ways, because he was angry at someone hurting Charlie, so he does respect (and to some lesser degree) trust Charlie. And 852 is a huge archive, so it will keep you reading for years!
