Xander is finally having his breakdown. He's finally broken through enough of the training that he's questioning which reactions are his and which are programmed in. Spike has just been through a huge scare and wants reassurance that Xander is okay. The collision of these two things is a very bad situation.
Particularly poignant, to me at least, was that collar, which had given Xander so much reaassurance, is now a symbol that he'll always be a slave. That he's Spike's property.
I liked how he manuevered Spike into staying even if he was only speaking the truth.
