He certainly sees himself as a conservationist... I don't think he's damaging the human psyche's in his care any less for that belief, but he does believe it. And he does believe Xander's genes should be passed on to the next generation
And despite Xander's insecurities, I don't think Angel is going to give up on him any more than Spike would. But I also don't know if he can get there before this standoff ends... and I don't think there's a logical way for it to end in Xander's favor.
