Sam was fleeing because of Amelia's husband and staying in the cabin when Dean found him grieving her loss.. I to disagree with the writers choice but I do understand what they were trying to do. They were trying to bring the season back to where it was at the beginning of season 1 with Sam out of hunting but having a good reason to return, and then try to rebuild the relationship that Kripke tore apart in season 4 & 5 and Sera never repaired in seasons 7, 8, & 9
