I love Wesley, and I give Wesley a lot of credit for trying to deal with Xander naturally without ignoring what happened. But because we're seeing this through Xander's point of view, I think that Xander still sees Wesley as the geeks who showed up in Sunnydale. Hopefully Wesley will be able to redeem himself. And as much as Cordy was rather inhumane on the show, she always had more depth to her. It's one of the reasons why I love her.
And I think you're right that Xander's personality is definitely reasserting itself inside, and he's trying (and in many cases succeeding) to overcome his training, but it isn't easy.
And I'm glad you caught the fact that the flashback couldn't take hold on him here. Even though Xander had the momentary sensation of those metal links across his back, he really did pull himself out of that memory. I'm trying to show that he really is fighting his way back.
