One of the problems of writing a very strong point of view story is that we only know what the character we're following knows. She was at the Las Vegas show, and Xander saw Spike go off to talk to her while he was competing. So I either she helped Spike or she had offered to help find the witches, and Spike just found them first. Either way, she was one of those characters functioning in the background.
