I think Jack can be a lot more diplomatic than he lets on. He just likes playing the bumpkin because people ignore the village idiot, and he'd rather be ignored. And I agree that Jack has to respect Jim. Alone and with very few resources, Jim has managed to make them all look like idiots. Jack's lack of ego would allow him to enjoy that even when others would have been ready to eviscerate Jim.
