Gotta agree with all the other comments. That part of the episode always seemed absolutely stupid like the writers were thinking "Well someone has to do it. Meh Xander'll do". He's been fighting demons for about 5 and a half years at that point. he's NOT that absolutely moronic. Great explanation, and I also would like to see more. Of course anything you write is usually good and I'd like to see more, so there's no surprise in that.
