It would be easy to turn Riley into a damsel in distress but take into account that not all wizards/witches are equally gifted, that these are kids with a more limited repetoire (I'm sure few Slytherins were in the DA and they can't ALL have been taking special dark lessons at home during the breaks); and they're in Hogwarts and will get in trouble for doing too much damage.
On the other hand, teenagers-how much forethought are we talking here? Eh.
